Retro Toshiba TV – Realistic Prop
This project is a recreation of a retro Toshiba television, aimed at practicing realistic prop modeling and PBR texturing, with a focus on natural wear and visual storytelling.
My goal was to capture the object's personality through subtle imperfections, believable materials, and a clean presentation.
Modeling was done in 3ds Max —the first software I learned— and I enjoy its layer-based workflow, which keeps a modeling history that, in my opinion, makes inorganic modeling easier to manage.
Textures were created in Substance Painter, using PBR materials and wear masks to achieve a worn but believable look.
I specifically wanted to play with the roughness of the glass to replicate the kind of aging and dirt typical of old TV screens.
The scene was rendered in Maya with Arnold.
This prop was part of a personal exercise to strengthen my portfolio with realistic everyday objects, applying visual storytelling through detail.
I focused on finding the right balance between cleanliness and wear, without overdoing the dirt, while maintaining a believable 1970s–80s aesthetic.
I’m aware the model has a few mesh issues I later learned to recognize, but since this was a personal project, I decided to keep them as part of the learning process.
Software used: 3ds Max, Maya, Substance Painter, Arnold.
